PE stamp in Indiana: the 2014 building code and the engineer seal
Indiana still enforces the 2014 Indiana Building Code, based on the 2012 IBC. Class 1 construction documents carry an Indiana PE seal and signature on every drawing sheet.

Start new quoteWhen an Indiana PE stamp is required
The State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers registers engineers under IC 25-31. When a design professional is required for a filing, 675 IAC 12-6-7 requires the plans to be prepared by a registrant who is competent for that construction, and each page of the drawings plus the title page of the specifications to carry a legible signature and seal. The project address controls the registration.
The code in force is the 2014 Indiana Building Code, 675 IAC 13-2.6, which adopts the 2012 International Building Code with Indiana amendments, effective December 1, 2014. The Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission has drafted a 2026 Indiana Building Code based on the 2024 IBC. That draft is not the code to cite until it is published with an effective date. Put the edition named on the application on the cover. AllInStamp matches an Indiana-registered PE and verifies the registration before sealing.
State plan review and local administration
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and local units that have adopted an ordinance to administer the commission’s rules both enforce the same Indiana codes. A local building department does not adopt a different IBC edition for Class 1 structures. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, and smaller cities differ in whether the filing starts locally or with the state building commissioner. Name the city or county.
A written interpretation by the state building commissioner can bind the parties to a dispute with a local unit. If the project already has a variance, an interpretation, or a plan-review comment, upload it with the drawings.
Seal design and partial responsibility
864 IAC 1.1-7-2 sets the engineer seal generally between 1-5/8 and 1-7/8 inches in outside diameter. It may be embossed, applied electronically, or applied with a rubber stamp. Plans may be reduced if the seal stays legible. The name and registration number match the certificate. The letters “PE” may be left off the certificate number on the seal.
The seal is used only while the certificate is current and has not been suspended or revoked, and only on documents prepared by the registrant or by regularly employed subordinates under the registrant’s direct supervision. The seal, signature, and date have to be legible. When the registrant is in responsible charge of work submitted to the state building commissioner or another governmental body, the full seal goes on each page of the drawings and on the title page of the specifications. If the registrant is responsible for only part of a sheet, the seal goes on the pages where that work appears, and a note below the signature and date states the part of the work.
How to get an Indiana set sealed
Upload the PDF plan set and calculations, and note whether the reviewer is the state or a local unit. Cite the 2014 Indiana Building Code unless the application itself names a different effective edition. Out-of-state drawings can be reviewed. The seal is applied only by an Indiana registrant who takes responsible charge of the work.

FAQ
- Is Indiana on the 2021 or 2024 International Building Code?
- The building code in effect is the 2014 Indiana Building Code, which adopts the 2012 IBC with Indiana amendments. A 2026 code based on the 2024 IBC has been drafted. Use it only after the Commission publishes an effective date. Confirm the edition on the application.
- Does every drawing sheet need the Indiana PE seal?
- When a design professional is required, each page of the drawings and the title page of the specifications carry the legible signature and seal. A registrant responsible for only part of the set seals the pages where that work appears and notes the limit under the signature.
- Can a PE registered in another state stamp Indiana drawings?
- No. Filings that require a design professional under the General Administrative Rules use a PE registered under IC 25-31. AllInStamp routes Indiana jobs to Indiana registrants.
