When an Ontario P.Eng seal is required

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) licenses P.Eng practitioners who may take professional responsibility for engineering in the province. Municipal building departments apply the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Structural design, many HVAC and electrical systems in Part 3 buildings, and work beyond prescriptive Part 9 paths typically need a P.Eng.

A U.S. PE license is not a substitute for PEO licensure. AllInStamp matches an Ontario P.Eng and verifies the license before sealing.

P.Eng vs BCIN designer

Ontario also registers Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) designers for certain classes of buildings. A BCIN is not a P.Eng seal. If the chief building official asks for a professional engineer, you need PEO licensure—not only a designer registration. If you are unsure which the municipality wants, include the CBO comment in your upload.

Toronto, Ottawa, and other municipalities

Toronto Building, Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton, and smaller municipalities each have e-permit portals and commitment-to-review forms. General review (formerly “general review during construction”) is often required in addition to the design seal. Scope whether you need design documents only or ongoing general review.

Schedules (e.g. commitment forms signed by the engineer of record) are part of many Ontario submissions. Tell us if the city has already issued a deficiency list.

Cleaner Ontario permit sets

Show applicable OBC parts, occupancy, and whether the building is Part 3 or Part 9. Coordinate architectural layouts with structural grids before asking for a seal. Metric units are standard on many Ontario sets—do not mix imperial without a note.

FAQ

Can a U.S. PE stamp an Ontario project?
No. Ontario work that requires a professional engineer must be sealed by a P.Eng licensed by PEO. AllInStamp routes Ontario jobs to P.Eng licensees.
Do you cover Toronto and the rest of the province?
Yes. We match P.Eng licensure for the province and note the municipality so schedules and portal habits can be followed.
Is general review included in a stamp quote?
Live stamp quotes cover document review and sealing of the uploaded set. Construction general review is scoped separately if the municipality requires it.
