When a California permit needs a PE stamp

California building departments require a California-licensed engineer on regulated structural, civil, and MEP work. That usually includes structural calculations, lateral design, foundations on engineered soils, retaining walls, commercial MEP plans, and anything outside the conventional light-frame provisions of the California Residential Code.

A PE license from another state is not accepted in California. The engineer must hold active licensure with the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists (BPELSG). AllInStamp verifies California licensure before any set is stamped.

PE stamping in Los Angeles

Los Angeles projects are reviewed by LADBS (Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety) inside city limits and by LA County Building and Safety in unincorporated areas. Both apply the California Building Code with local amendments, including seismic requirements that make stamped structural calculations common even on residential work such as ADUs, additions, and soft-story retrofits.

Our licensed PE review for Los Angeles permits checks the set against the applicable LA amendments before stamping, so plan check comments focus on project specifics rather than missing engineering.

San Diego, San Francisco, Orange County, and Sacramento

San Diego Development Services, San Francisco DBI, the Orange County cities and county, and the City and County of Sacramento each run their own plan check with local amendments and submittal portals. We note the jurisdiction at intake so the stamped set matches what that plan checker expects.

We also cover the Inland Empire, the Bay Area outside San Francisco, the Central Valley, and the rest of California. If the jurisdiction is not listed, choose California in the quote form and enter the city.

Title 24 and California-specific checks

Many California permits also need Title 24 energy documentation, CALGreen checklists, and, for some projects, fire sprinkler or accessibility sheets. We flag missing California-specific items during review so the package is complete before it reaches plan check.

Public schools (reviewed by DSA) and hospitals (reviewed by HCAI) require a licensed Structural Engineer (SE) for structural work. Tell us at intake if your project falls under either agency.
